We spent a good portion of time working on ringing a bell to go out. We initially hung it on his crate in the living room. Initially he would enthusiastically ring it for a treat but then would seem to get bored with it stop. I determined that the reward wasn't big enough. We then moved the bell to the back door. Once he adjusted to it hanging there he seemed much more interested in it because ringing it meant he could go outside (a high reward).
