Sadie learned how to Leave It today. Along with obvious uses like food being dropped on the floor, this skill will be used when Sadie gets focused on the cats and tries to chase them. When we practiced it she gave us almost immediate attention! Unfortunately Yodel's lesson for Come When Called was tonight, not a few weeks ago, when he got loose. While he would come close when called, he wouldn't come all the way. It eventually took several people to wrangle him. So tonight we played recall games like Puppy Ping Pong, and used the Premack Principle to teach him that coming to us is fun! He did very well and is on his way to a reliable recall. Mitzi is steered by her nose and, therefore, has a habit of pulling when on leash when she catches a scent. Today we taught her that walking near us and offering us eye contact earned her a food reward as well as the opportunity to keep moving forward. Within a matter of a few minutes Mitzi was walking without pulling! We taught Oreo how to Wait, Stay, and Go to Bed. By the end of our session he was staying as we walked out of sight, up and down steps, and to the door. These new skills will give Oreo something to do instead of getting too excited and jumping on people. Luna has done so very well with her training. She even goes to her mat and waits when someone comes to the door. Tonight we took her on a socialization walk around the neighborhood where we saw all kinds of people, including kids, and she met another puppy! Trucks still make her a little nervous but she is getting better each time she sees one. |
