"Owners frequently complain of 'hyperactivity' and 'attention deficit disorder' in their dogs. True hyperactivity or hyperkinesis is extremely rare; these dogs cannot settle down and posses elevated heart and respiratory rates at rest. Most dogs thought to be 'hyperactive' are simply under-stimulated. The best treatment is consistent, daily mental and physical activity to channel their behavior into more acceptable avenues."

Note that 'mental' activity is included. With Ash, I have found just 15 minutes a day of obedience 'practice' (just going over sit, down, stay, etc.) and maybe the teaching of a new trick works wonders to calm her down, and it is obviously great for reinforcing her manners. You know how you feel after a mentally draining day; you just want to relax!
